Failing To Fire Up Against Dragons

Llanelli Basketball Club was severely punished on Sunday after a poor display against their Carmarthen counter parts. The Team looked to repeat their level of performance, which saw them narrowly, miss-out on a win after a remarkable comeback against Swansea College the week before.

Unfortunately there would be no repeat of that as the team failed to lift themselves against Carmarthen Dragons. The teams met last month in Carmarthen, who ran away 67-56 victors. The current West Wales Basketball champions took to the court with the starting five of Captain Mike Esney, Ben Adams, Edward Shum, Barry Davies and Frank Lynch. It was Carmarthen who started and finished the quarter strongly, racing into a 16-9 lead.

Barry Davies bagged his team some much-needed points with his accurate shooting and Paul Henderson and Frank Lynch linked up well on occasions to create scoring opportunities. The deficit between the teams remained the same as the second quarter came to a closer. Llanelli Captain, Mike Esney looked to motivate his troops to pull themselves back into the game, but loose passing and needless shooting cost the side dearly as they trailed 36-48 at the end of the third quarter.

With the Dragons firing on all cylinders, Llanelli could do little to stop the onslaught. The last quarter was one-sided affair with Carmarthen adding 19 points to their team tally whilst Llanelli only recorded six.

The final hooter blew to end one of Llanelli?s poorest performances of the season. For Llanelli, Barry Davies continued to lead the personal points tally as he registered 14 points. However, the team can celebrate the fact that, despite loss, they have qualified for the playoffs.

Llanelli Team: Mike Esney (captain), Ben Adams, Edward Shum, Lee Sweetland, Tom Hoyt, Barry Davies, John Davies, Paul Henderson, Colin Greer, Paul Thomas and Frank Lynch.
